Faith Leaders to Press for Action During G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --

Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World and more than 25 national religious leaders will convene in Pittsburgh tonight to kick off a two-day Faith Leaders Summit, September 22-23, in advance of the Group of 20 (G-20) Summit, September 24-25.

"We want to remind world leaders that the most important indicator of economic recovery should be what happens to hungry and poor people," said Rev. Beckmann. "Many families are struggling to put food on the table in our own country, and 200 million additional people around the world have been driven into hunger in the wake of the world economic crisis -- 90 million of them in 2009 alone..."

The Faith Leaders Summit is organized by Bread for the World, the Alliance to End Hunger and other partners. Leaders from the Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths will attend. Participants include Galen Carey of the National Association of Evangelicals; Steve Colecchi of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops; Steve Gutow of the Jewish Council on Public Affairs; Bernice Powell Jackson of the World Council of Churches; and Bill Shaw of the National Baptist Convention.
