CELEBRATES 139th ANNIVERSARY
Flushing, New York October 28, 2009 – Ebenezer Baptist Church, the oldest African-American Baptist church in Queens, New York founded in 1870 is celebrating on November 8, 2009 its 139th anniversary. Rev. Calvin Leander Gibson, Pastor, of Ebenezer Baptist church announced today. Ebenezer Baptist Church has been a stalwart in the movement for social justice for generations. The pastor-emeritus, the Rev. Dr. Timothy P. Mitchell was an active participant in the civil rights era led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. Rev. Gibson proclaims that this legacy of love and justice continues in the hearts and actions of its members today. Rev. Gibson stated that Ebenezer means “Stone of Help†and it is the mission of our church to continue to be a “stone of help†for those in need in the local community , as well as nationally and globally. This celebration is the beginning of what will be a year long celebration culminating with a grand 140th celebration in November 2010. The speaker at 11:00am service will be the Rev. Cornell Gibson of Ebenezer Baptist Church. The celebration at 4:00pm will be with the Rev. James Woodley and his congregation of the Friendship Baptist Church of Paterson, New Jersey.
Rev. Gibson said that this celebration will “remember the spiritual and cultural history of the African-American community , which is rooted in the church.†â€The church has been the foundation of our existence and has strengthened our community through good and difficult times.â€
