Hundreds of students recently graduated from high school in North Omaha and many plan on going to college with aspirations of becoming doctors, lawyers, and also engineers. Achieving higher education can be costly, so thank God for scholarships. Earlier this summer, several scholarships were awarded to local students, at the New Era Baptist State Convention of Nebraska, Inc. Congress of Christian Education 92nd Annual Session*.
New Era and Bellevue University is pleased to announce its first five-year performance based scholarship up to twenty thousand dollars awarded to Brynn Alayna Washington. Miss Washington is the daughter of Cherrese Washington and Robert A. Biggs. She is a Central High School graduate who plans to major in psychology. Miss Washington is a member of Paradise Baptist Church, Omaha, NE, Dr. Thomas L. Smith, Sr., pastor.
The New Era Congress of Christian Education was in session June 6-9, 2011, at the Salem Baptist Church, Omaha, NE, Dr. Selwyn Q. Bachus, pastor, which included a week of spiritual nurturing and growth. The free classes ranged from Christian discipleship to evangelism.
Convention President Dr. Cedric L. Perkins says he looks forward to working with Bellevue University, other local colleges and universities in providing young people with the funding needed for higher education.
This year, “one of New Era’s goals was to raise at least ten thousand dollars for scholarships.” With the help of God and the dedicated efforts of Mrs. Doris Lassiter, New Era’s College Preparatory and Scholarship Director, New Era went well beyond what was asked. Three additional $2,000 scholarships were awarded by New Era Baptist State Convention of Nebraska, Inc., in the names of the late Rev. J. C. Wade, late Rev. Z. W. Williams, and the late Rev. J. H. Whittington three former prominent pastors in the Omaha community, to three area high school students: Miss Oluyomi H. Adekunle, Miss Brynn A. Washington, and Mr. Destry Isaiah Starling; all graduates of Central High. At the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. Western Region Conference, New Era also awarded an additional $1,500 dollars in prize money to local students who participated in the New Era Oratorical Contest under the leadership of Ms. Velma Sanders, New Era Oratorical Director.
New Era will be conducting their 94th Annual Session, August 7 – 11, 2011, at the Morning Star Baptist Church, Omaha, NE, Dr. Leroy E. Adams, Jr., pastor, 7:00 p.m. nightly. August 9, 2011, National Baptist Convention USA, Inc., National Baptist President Dr. Julius R. Scruggs will be the keynote speaker for the Wade, Williams, Whittington Scholarship Service.
