Dr. Julius R. Scruggs, President of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., along with his wife, Convention First Lady, Josephine Scruggs, spent August 15-17, 2011 in Washington, DC. The visit was hosted by the American Red Cross, Disaster Partnerships, Ms. Juliet Choi, Senior Director and assisted by the Office of Disaster Management of the National Baptist Convention, Dr. Randy Vaughn, Director. (First Lady Scruggs is also the National Spokesperson for the American Red Cross.)

On August 16, Dr. Scruggs and his delegation (Mrs. Scruggs, Dr. Vaughn, Dr. Pickett, and Juliet Choi) received a private tour of the White House which included individual meetings with some of the senior White House staff. Mr. Paul Monteiro, White House Associate Director of Public Engagement was their personal tour guide. He met with Jon Carson, White House Director of Public Engagement, Gayle Smith, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director of National Security Council and Ari Alexander, USAID Senior Advisor to Administrator and Director of the Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.

The preeminent order for the day was centered on disaster equity, ensuring and empowering communities of color, creating a community where there is equal access to disaster relieve resources, and how to ensure that every community is left better after the disaster has come and gone. Another lively discussion centered on equity in small businesses, contracting opportunities, and ensuring safe and resilient communities of color. Gayle Smith, who had recently returned from Somalia, asked Dr. Scruggs to please keep the attention on the dying children of Somalia and to maintain the awareness of their plight.

On August 17, Dr. Scruggs met with some senior staff of the American Red Cross; Senior Vice President, Jerry De Francisco, Director of Disasters, Charley Sham Ski and Juliet Choi, Senior Director Disaster Partnerships. The day began with a warm welcome for Dr. Scruggs and an explanation as to what the partnership means to the American Red Cross. Mrs. Scruggs gave a passionate expression on her commitment to helping our communities share in the donation of blood. The meetings included a discussion of how to most effectively implement practical solutions for empowering local communities to help local communities.
