On Thursday morning, September 29, 2011, Dr. George W. Waddles, Sr, Congress of Christian Education president, addressed the board and local chapter leaders of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Incorporated, (SCDAA) at their 39th annual convention in Memphis. After being introduced by patient advocate of the year Shirley Miller, Dr. Waddles echoed the theme of the conference - “Voices of Progress: Redefining Living with Sickle Cell Disease, by reiterating the Congress’ committed to its new partnership with the SCDAA. Briefly, he shared about the first annual Sickle Sabbath Sunday and how hundreds of NBC churches across the country paused to acknowledge this dreaded disease. He encouraged these leaders to continue their great work and pledged continued cooperation between the two organizations. Dr. Waddles closed with a touching story about one of his young members who suffers from sickle cell disease. Those assembled were deeply touched as evidenced by warm applause amidst a standing ovation. Immediately afterward, SCDAA president and COO Sonja Banks greeted Dr. Waddles and National H.O.P.E.  Director Dr. Michael O. Minor. They made plans for future discussions to further develop this growing collaboration. Dr. Minor also conducted a workshop on “Developing the Outreach Partnerships that Yield Maximum Results.”
