Dr. Julius R. Scruggs was elected president of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. on September 10, 2009 during the 129th Annual Session, held in Memphis, TN.  Dr. Scruggs, who was serving as the Vice President-At-Large under the Shaw administration defeated Dr. Henry Lyons, 4,108 to 924 votes.  Building on a message of "Let's Go Forward!" and his campaign theme of "Solidarity with the Savior," Scruggs announced the following priorities for his administration:

• Building a stronger, more unified Convention
• Increase membership in 2.5 years to 10,000 churches
• Building a new student life center at American Baptist College
• Developing the Master's Degree in Pastoral Counseling at American Baptist College
• Focusing efforts on our missions work in Africa
• Embracing young pastors
• Enhancing Sunday School Publishing Board (SSPB) literature and increasing our use of it
• Improving the SSPB physical plant

Dr. Scruggs, who is also the Senior Pastor of First Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville, AL, began naming members to his cabinet on September 11, 2009.  Following is the preliminary roster of Board Members, Auxiliary Leaders and other named leadership roles:
