The National Baptist Laymen's Movement of the National Baptist Convention U.S.A., Inc. was organized at the Forty-third Session of the National Baptist Convention in Los Angeles, California, in 1923.

The August 30, 1924 issue of the National Baptist Voice stated the purpose of the Laymen 's Movement:

"And wherever the Laymen's Movement is organized, the spirit of it will be to see that the pastor is well paid; and to foster and encourage by words and our money the institutions of learning that have made space for Theological Departments, so as to have a better educated ministry, better Sunday School Superintendents, teachers, and B.Y.P.U. workers throughout our denomination."

2008 Year in Review:  A Photojournal of the Activities of the National Baptist Laymen

National Baptist Laymen Minister to Queensgate Correctional Facility
Cincinnati, Ohio - November 2008

The Prison Ministry team visited the Louisville Metro Correctional Facility on two occasions and was escorted by Chaplain Samuel Whitlow.

There were sixteen volunteers participating in the two visits on Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

On Tuesday night the team visited the women’s facility where there were approximately sixty inmates in attendance. After the preaching twenty-nine women gave their lives to Christ and were baptized on site. After the baptism they were served communion.

On Wednesday the team ministered at the men’s facility of the Louisville Metro Correctional Facility.
There were approximately 40 inmates in attendance. Fifteen men gave their lives to
Christ and were baptized on site.

For the two nights of ministering at the facility, a total of forty-four persons gave their lives to Christ and were baptized.

The visits and ministering on both nights was comprised of a worship service where there were devotions, songs, prayers, testimonies and preaching. Prison Ministry Chairman Emerson Turner, Tucson, AZ, arranged the visits and coordinated the activities and was assisted by Joe Miller of Baltimore, MD.

On Thursday, Turner sponsored a workshop to train more than 146 Louisville residents on the how to minister in prisons and jailhouses.
